The study of grief sounds interesting and thoughtful, and while it's not, mercifully, something I have personal experience of, I think you're right about the problems with the cultural idea that the kids should carry on regardless. Sometimes abandoning your plans to focus on the people in your life is the best of an unhappy set of choices.
