I've been impressed by how well people have held off on ranting about the ending in my previous entries, tbh, because so often any discussion of any book in this series does just go off to "and the ENDING of the SERIES is SO TERRIBLE."
Does Merry zap their memories at the end of the first book? I don't remember that, and they seem to remember pretty well what had happened earlier at the beginning of Greenwitch. The Drews do get their memories zapped midway through Greenwitch, though, when Will and Merry jump off a cliff and fly into the ocean like birds and they're not supposed to know that Will can do that. So we were at least forewarned that the Drews were not off limits for memory zapping.
Yes, Will zaps at least two of his brothers to protect them/himself - he really doesn't want his family tangled up in his Old One existence, but of course they keep getting dragged into it. He is an Old One but also still just a kid - an immortal, but still pretty close to humanity as yet.
