I think my view of it was also colored by having been accidentally spoiled about it during my reread (I didn't actually remember this at all from when I was a kid, so clearly it didn't make a big impression on me) but like a couple of the above commenters said, I also don't feel particularly upset about it, considering that the entire series contains a lot of memory tampering and the kids in general being jerked around by adults who are concerned with battle-between-good-and-evil matters much more than the comfort of the kids or human bystanders. I was kind of generally underwhelmed by the last book, though. For the big climactic book in the series, it feels like nothing much happens in it!
