Finally saw the newest version of Jane Eyre. Their Jane is a good mixture of fire and ice, but Rochester is way too creepy. Not that it’s out of character – Rochester is always kind of a creeper – but there’s a disturbing intensity to his creepitude in this version.

I’m thinking particularly of the scene just after he and Jane met, where they’re sitting in front of the fire and he’s all “If I fell in love with someone PURE and INNOCENT like YOU, do you think you she could uplift me?” and Jane gives him a “Are you trying to seduce me, Mr. Rochester? Because we JUST MET and you’re creeping me out” look.

Also, he and St. John bear a disturbing resemblance to each other. EW.

I did like that the filmmakers pointed out that keeping Bertha Rochester in the attic was, given the time period, a comparatively humane thing to do. Sure, Rochester should have told his prospective bride that he was already married to a crazy woman, but at least he kept said crazy woman comfortable in his home rather than shipping her off to a horrible 1840s lunatic asylum where they kept people in chains.
