Garrow's Law
Oct. 4th, 2011 04:02 pmYOU GUYS. YOU GUYS. The second season of Garrow's Law is coming to Netflix! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!! I watched the first season while I was in England; the professor of my eighteenth century urban British history class actually recommended it to us, because, and I quote, "How often is there a programme about the reformation of 18th century British law?"
OUR HERO is William Garrow, the reformer of 18th century British law, who created the idea of the defense attorney and also ran away with a married aristocratic lady by the name of LADY SARAH, which I thought was ridiculous but is actually based on historical fact, oops. Eighteenth century London! A very scandalous place!
The romance between Lady Sarah and Garrow is a bit cookie-cutter - she's into reform, he's attempting to reform stuff but is kind of bad at it, she's into him anyway because her husband is decent but basically spineless... I thought her relationship with her husband was fascinating, actually. Their marriage has clearly failed, not with a bang but with a whimper; there's still some affection between them, but hers is tinged with disappointment in him, and his with incomprehension of her.
I think Lady Sarah and Garrow could be a good pairing. She's certainly willing to smack him down when he's being insufferable, which is always a plus, but he spends too much time being insufferable for me to really root for them to get together. But! Perhaps in the second season he will grow up a bit.
AND. AND. For those of you who are into creepy slashy nemesises (nemesi?)! Garrow has one. His name is Sylvester and he possesses a sneer and an accent so posh that it could cut cheese. They have a duel! It is amazing! And thereafter there is an unnecessary but not unsatisfying scene where Lady Sarah gives him what-for and Garrow is forced to take his shirt off. (By circumstance. Not Lady Sarah. Although that would be entertaining, too.)
So, yes. Garrow's Law. Arriving any day! It's going to be great!
