The Great Metropolis here being Indianapolis, which is about as good as it gets in Indiana. (We also have Gary, but that’s an outpost of hell so it doesn’t count. The sky used to be orange, and the air still reeks of steel.)

I bought books, including one called Snoop which is all about the psychologically revealing nature of other people’s stuff. Finally, a scientifically sound reason to be nosy! “But I’m poking through your desk for a psychology experiment, Veni! I’m furthering the pursuit of Truth! How can you possibly be angr—put down the battle axe!”

This may be an even better excuse than “I’m gathering material for great works of literature.” Most people, quite rightly, become concerned about being immortalized in a less than flattering manner.

I did take part in an actual psych experiment earlier this week. It wasn’t the most fun afternoon ever, but I got paid ten dollars (and of course advanced the cause of science).

It’s a nice thing about modern culture, I think, that we’re curious enough and concerned enough about truth that we pay people to help us find it. Not just human lab rats for psych experiments, but scientists and journalists and engineers.
