The Claudia Kishi Club

The new show gave me such a surge of enthusiasm for The Baby-sitters Club that I also watched the short (17-minute) Netflix documentary The Claudia Kishi Club, which is basically just a compilation of Asian-American creative professionals (writers, artists, film makers etc) enthusing about how they saw themselves in Claudia as in few other Asian-American characters when they were growing up in the 80s and 90s.

(I do wonder if Laurence Yep and Lensey Namioka ever see this sort of thing and go “What were my books, chopped liver?” But of course Yang the Youngest and His Terrible Ear occupies a very different cultural space than The Baby-sitters Club.)

It’s the sort of documentary that you’ll probably like if you grew up on The Baby-sitters Club, whether or not Claudia Kishi was your favorite character, and probably will find a little confusing if you’re not familiar with the books, as it’s very much assuming an audience of fans.

I can't remember reading more than a handful of the original novels, but she was definitely mine.
