Indianapolis Art Museum

Earlier this week (back when the weather was still warmish and beautiful), my mother and I went to the Indianapolis art museum.



It is surprisingly splendid! They had a splendid Monet, a painting of Venice at dawn with streaks of pink that make the paint seem to glow off the canvas. Alas, my photo didn't come out, but I suppose that's to be expected with Monet.

I did get some decent photos of other paintings, though.





T. C. Steele studied art in Munich, but nonetheless his later work drifted into impressionism. In later life he lived in the House of the Singing Winds in Brown County (which I visited last fall), which became his Giverny: most of his later paintings, like this one, are set somewhere in the county.







John W. Hardrick was an African-American painter in Indianapolis in the early twentieth century (back when, hard though this may be to believe, Indiana was a strong force in the American art world). Dolly and Rach were his daughters.

I really *like* small art museums; they're encompassible in a way that larger ones aren't. *love* your two painting photos--the first one is a scene I can easily imagine you or me or any of our friends re-creating, and the second is simply gorgeous, and it's great to discover African-American painters.

And wow, your mom is stylish!

The Indianapolis art museum is actually pretty large. The photo only shows the rotunda, but there are four floors of stuff in there, and we only got through half the European art and most of the American art before we zonked out. Oh well. Another time, another trip!

And my mother is very stylish! I hope that as I get older I will age as gracefully as she does.
