God jul!

Merry Christmas for those of you who celebrate: In Sweden Christmas Eve is the big day, but as I worked in the evening we didn’t do much. My parents came for lunch, and it was all very nice anyway. We don’t go in for lots of gifts, I gave my husband and son a sweater each, because that is what they both wanted. And my husband gave me a book. It was written in the 1950s and is an analysis of the bodies, jewelry and clothes worn by king Gustav Vasa, his three wives, his son Johan III and his second wife. They all lived in the 16th century, and the book is probably only of interest for a history and costume history nerd like me.

Working was thankfully slow, and as I work evening today as well, I hope to have another slow workday. I plan to check out Yuletida and see if there is any fanfic that interests me. I hope you all have a lovely day, regardless of how you spend it!

Hung out with my friend Nikki today! We met for the first time at a get-together for polerinas that my instructor put together. And we were comfortable with each other right away. Today, she had the day off for Christmas. We had lunch at a cafe, a hummus platter and a vegan banana walnut cake. She has similar gut issues as I do so we enjoy ordering food together; neither of us feels like we're making the other person miss out on something else they'd rather eat.

Afterwards, we went to the library. I finished reading the book I'd borrowed, and she browsed for a while before picking out a pile of books and then flipping through them to decide what she wanted to borrow. I borrowed Butter by Asako Yuzuki, and it's the specific edition that I'd been eyeing in Shelfish ever since I worked there and wasn't allowed to read the books. (You know, when you're not allowed to do something you want to doubly do it.) Is the fact that the library had it a Sign? Anything's a sign if you want to give it significance. I'm healing, so it's a Sign.

Nikki had wanted to go to Spinebreaker or Shelfish initially. I told her that both places had traumatised me and that it was a long story. She thought I was joking at first, but I didn't want to go into the whole history of both places and why I wasn't welcome at either. I told her that it was awkward telling people that I was traumatised by bookstores because, when I tell them I was traumatised by school for instance, they instinctively understand, but when I say I was traumatised by bookstores, they think I must be joking.

The part I didn't tell her is that when people react like this, it feels like they're laughing at what I experienced or trivialising my hurt, even though they mostly don't know enough to react aptly in the first place. It's just such a difficult thing to talk to people about that I wish it never came up in the first place. The emotional labour of explaining it and making them understand the impact it had on me just sucks, as a process. For a while, I've been thinking that they can't understand me as a person without knowing this about me, but maybe this isn't as big a part of my self as all that. At one point it defined everything about the way I was, but thankfully that time is behind me. As the heroine of the manhwa Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story says, people heal with time and people are more resilient than they think.

Manga rec: K-9: Public Security Bureau – Division 9 – Special Abilities Countermeasure

I've fallen in love with this manga and am continually surprised at how few people seem to have heard of it, so here's my humble attempt to spread the word :D (This is a cross-post from my journal, where I'm also delighted to discuss this fandom anytime :D :D)

It only took one promo picture to get me to check it out:

A man with fluffy hair with bloodied face holding the cheek of a smoking woman with a bloodied face, text in English

...I didn't really ask any more questions after that. Bonus impact for stumbling on it in Japanese because the "kept pet" implied in the verb is lovely, and obviously plays with the K-9/"police dog" title.

Anyway, meet Oboro on the left - he's great - and Ren on the right - she's great. The art is beautiful, and everyone is very pretty.

About the world

Some people have special abilities, most of which are not well understood. Only one thing is known for sure: these abilities manifest after someone commits a crime. For example, the criminal from the first chapter is an arsonist and can control/become fire. (Somewhat unrelated, but this is pretty fun coming in from the Boku No Hero Academia world, because it's like a universe in which only bad guys get a quirk.) Here, these abilities are called "sins." In the Japanese, it's simply the kanji for crime with "sin" written in katakana beside it.

This seems pretty simplistic at first glance, but that slowly changes as we drill deeper into the worldbuilding and learn the nuances of these abilities and how they manifest. The implications are deeply fucked up, with often devastating consequences that I'm totally here for as my heart gets shattered again and again.

The story premise

Our plucky detective Ren is selected to join Division 9, a newly created division that pairs a detective with a sin user in order to fight fire with fire -- what could possibly go wrong?! I love her. She kicks so much ass.

Woman with a leg up kicking some dude in the face mid-stride

So, who's our main cast?

Short character profiles )

Four characters looking way too cool as they step through a broken wall

TOGETHER THEY FIGHT CRIME! More specifically, crime related to sin users. But they also get their asses kicked and handed over to them quite a bit, haha.

A bit more on the story and on them )

Where to read? How many chapters are out?

37 chapters, 3 volumes. Totally possible to catch up in a reasonable amount of time! )

MGS: Rat in a Foxhole by thelonebamf

Fandom: Metal Gear Solid
Pairings/Characters: Snake/Otacon
Rating: G
Length: 13,779 (1:33:04)
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] thelonebamf
Theme: Amnesty, Ambiguous Relationships, Angst (With A Happy Ending), Hurt/Comfort, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Trauma & Recovery, Pre-Canon

Summary: Snake returns from Operation N313, lauded a hero and finds the latest shipment of Foxhound recruits already at the camp. Still struggling to sort out his thoughts about the mission, he finds his attention drawn to one rookie in particular, a scrawny, unassuming runt who can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Reccer's Notes: This just works so damn well as an alternate first meeting for these two! It's such a dismal, pessimistic setting - as expected with this canon - but the way these two forge a connection, finding some degree of comfort and caring and hope - makes me really emotional! And I love the use of the book, as well! (Also somehow even though I always knew the Hal connection to 2001: A Space Odyssey I never noticed how Dave fits in to it, too?! 🤦)

SVSSS: blood, leave no stain by Boomchick

Fandom: The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Pairings/Characters: Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu
Rating: T
Length: 4,491
Creator Links: [profile] boomchick
Theme: Amnesty, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort, Magic, Mythical Creatures: Demons, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Spells & Curses, Trauma and Recovery

Summary: Luo Binghe's healing powers falter in the shape of the wounds Xiu Ya once gave him. He does the only logical thing--HIDES IT.
Shen Qingqiu knows something is wrong with his husband, but finding out what is going to hurt...

A sweet little post-canon fic about healing, plotted with and illustrated by the incredible Falcities for the SVSSS Gotcha for Gaza

Reccer's Notes: This is such a sweet, thoughtful fic! Binghe always tries so hard to be strong, and never really quite escapes the trauma reaction that he doesn't deserve help or that suffering is just something to be endured. In this post-canon fic, his husband gets the opportunity to tell him otherwise and show him just how much he loves all parts of him, including the demonic parts!

It also has quite possibly my favourite (and very appropriate to the themes!) no beta tag ever: No beta but we live regardless

SVSSS: the future is a foreign country by marquisguyun

Fandom: The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Pairings/Characters: Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu
Rating: T
Length: 3,248
Creator Links: [personal profile] marquisguyun
Theme: Amnesty, Character Development, Domestic, Happy Endings, Hurt/Comfort, Time Travel

Summary: Luo Binghe had suffered through numerous life-changing revelations since waking up on the floor of the woodshed. First he had thought he was dead and a ghost, then he'd been informed he was in the future, then they'd tried to tell him that he was a demon. But still, the most unbelievable thing this strange future version of his shijie had tried to convince him of was that he was married to their shizun.

Reccer's Notes: This was written for the prompt 'Time Travel - Character discovers future self is apparently happy in the MOST unlikely relationship', and truly I cannot think of a better canon ship for that than this pair 😄 This is so sweet, and baby Binghe's POV is so perfectly young and hurt and yearning and protective-instincts-inciting...! And then the canon couple themselves are just so very sweet and perfect... <33 Such love!!!

Merry Christmas

Yesterday (Christmas Eve) I worked a half day from home before finishing for the year. I spoke to a few of my family on the phone. I went skating with some of my uni teammates on the last public skate until Saturday, but sadly failed to persuade any of the others to wear a santa hat along with me. I brought a teammate's kit back to my house so I know I have it to take to meet her in Prague next month (did I mention I'm going to hockey camp near Prague in January with the Women's Blues? same coaches & place as I went to last June). I got stocking supplies for the household.

In the early evening Tony, Charles and I gathered for the ritual watching of Die Hard and followed it with Knives Out. I enjoyed both films very much, still. I filled the stockings for everyone before going to bed, and fell asleep over a library book.

I am grateful for my home, my family, my friendships, and all the good things in my life.

I am thinking of you today because it is Christmas,
and I wish you happiness.

And tomorrow, because it will be the day after Christmas,
I shall still wish you happiness; and so on throughout the year.

I may not be able to tell you about it every day because I may be far away,
or because both of us may be very busy, or perhaps I cannot even afford to pay the postage on so many letters;or find the time to write them.

But that makes no difference. The thought and the wish will be here just the same
In my work and in the business of life I mean to try not to be unfair to you in any way.

In my pleasure if we can be together, I would like to share the fun with you.

Whatever joy or success that comes to you will make me glad.

Without pretense, and in plain words Good Will is what I mean.

May the spirit of Christmas be yours throughout the year.

Yuletide!

What a great thing to wake up to in my part of the world - the Yuletide archive is open! (Usually here in Germany it's noon before that happens.) Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and peaceful holidays for everyone. I will do my annual pic spam later, but for now, here are the two lovely Foundation stories I got, both Demerzel-centric, the former from her pov, the second from Cleon XXIV's - last season's Day, in other words - , and both superb in their characterisations.

On the plus side, it is 2359 on the 24th, and all of the Chrimbo stuff is upstairs and ready and everything. We did it! We couldn't stop Christmas from coming, it came!

Here's some stuff from today:

Woke up and did fairly leisurely breakfast, while chatting with Alys and Charlie and mom. We had time to play a game of Moonshine, which I lost spectacularly, and then it was Off To The Shops, for last minute christmas shopping and also groceries.

We started with a couple of Very Large presents for dad, which necessitated me forcing mom to take a photo of me so I could send it to Shaenon Garrity, as life imitated art. I sure was a replica of Tip from the first storyline of Skin Horse, minus the gender-inappropriate pink angora sweater. (I was instead wearing a very gender appropriate Maya Kern skirt with pumpkins on it)

The presents were so large that we went straight home to swap the car out for those and collect Jonny!!!!! who is going to be doing Chrimbo with us this year. I'm excited about it! It's been ages and ages since we've had a brother at Christmas, and Jonny!!!!! is better than most. (He's one of the drama department teens mom adopted when I was in high school, who moved back to Maryland and joined the Gay Man's Choir of Washington like a year before mom did. It's great that they've gotten to spend a lot more time together!). Then mom and Jonny!!!!! and I went out to get the groceries, which was extra charming because he and I basically entered into a mini-contest of who could be more helpful at any given moment.

Ah, oldest daughter syndrome. <3

We got home, where Charlie put away the groceries and did some preliminary reorganization of the pantry, which badly needs it (I believe he plans to do more on the 26th). Then we ordered some Thai food for dinner (Chinese would be more traditional, but my parents have not yet located a good Chinese place, to everyone's sadness) and taught Jonny!!!!! how to play Moonshine. I did much better, but Jonny!!!!! still clinched the win.

Somewhere along the way "the kids" (a phrase I use ambiguously --using it exclusively like this, I mean just the people younger than me, if I use it inclusively, it's also me and Jonny!!!!!) watched Once Upon a Mattress, which was fun to hear in the other room.

We all finished wrapping presents, and then dad called for the traditional reading of The Night Before Christmas to us over the phone --he's working at the hospital overnight tonight, meaning I haven't actually seen him since getting to MD. To be fair, I arrived at piss late last night (I think my train was delayed by almost 2.5 hours altogether, most of it at the front end...I got on around 1525 for a train that was supposed to depart at 1337.). So he was in bed already, and then left for work well before I got up. I'll see him tomorrow!

Alys read Charlie the last two chapters of The Woman Who Rides Like A Man, with mom and I happily eavesdropping and fucking around mindlessly a bit. We're all very excited listening to Charlie make predictions since he didn't know the Alanna books at all before Al started reading them to him! Then it was time for evening chores and putting away the dishes and stuff, and just before bed, Santa showed up to fill the stockings! I helped with that, and off we went.

To write words, remembered at the last minute, and now I am cozy and warm. Time to find them sugarplums, because apparently the morning sibling gossip time starts at 0630. I am obviously complaining about it and equally obviously, am probably just fine with it. We'll see how I feel tomorrow morn.

Goodnight and be well!

~Sor
