I think the ending works a little better in the book than it does in the summary: Jeremy has turned the corner on his suicidal despair, and in doing so has at long last accepted his homosexuality! For the values of accept that means "I recognize that I have a problem" (homosexuality as alcoholism), not accept as in, like, "What if I found a boyfriend?", but it's still a big turning point for him.
