Apparently the total lack of appropriate boundaries is ALSO a mid-century doctor thing! Boundaries, like doctor-patient confidentiality, only reached doctors in books in about 1995. (Also, skygiants, I think it was, was telling me about how her grandmother the midcentury psychologist sometimes had patients live in the basement, so this is clearly not just literary invention!)
