I would absolutely buy that there was a submarine in The Twenty-One Balloons, but it has been MANY years since I read it so I don't remember. In any case, insofar as it can be reduced to Boy Meets *Form of Transportation*, surely it would be Boy Meets Balloon...

Although really anyone who read the book hoping for that sort of story involving either balloon OR submarine would be disappointed.
