Apparently dropping in on famous authors was this whole 19th-century Thing! I guess it might have gone along with the accepted custom of visiting or leaving cards? And even now people email/write famous authors. But I remember reading Jackson's and L'Engle's books how sick they got of classrooms full of children writing to them to fulfill an assignment, and that would have been in the 1960s, I think.
