Bly notes that once she got to the asylum she dropped her “mad” act as once, but none of the doctors or nurses ever even entertained the idea that she might be sane

Sadly, there are still problems along these lines - recently in the US a man was found to have been in a psych facility for YEARS under the wrong identity. The "proof" that he was mad was that he kept insisting that his name was [his actual name] not [the name they thought was his name]. They kept putting him on more and more meds to try to make him agree that his name was [the name they thought was his name]

Finally someone checked, and lo and behold, he was sane and should never have been there.
