The characters spend a lot of the book unhappy because of their various romantic mishaps, but the book has a certain humorous distance from their sadness that The Well of Loneliness totally lacks. And "unhappy because romantic misadventure" is easier to read than "unhappy because afflicted with the Mark of Cain (a.k.a. inversion)" anyway.
