I wonder to what extent the specific flavors of different adaptions' Demonizations of Amy reflect the timing of that adaption? I feel like I'm not phrasing that well, but like-- I imagine "hoarding food" is a type of monstrous that audiences would particularly condemn so soon after WWII...? And then you've got the 2019 adaption which is very sympathetic to Amy, and comes at a time when there was a sort of social reckoning about how the media had treated women in the past couple of decades/newly sympathetic media about women who had been demonized by the media in the 90s (e.g., Tonya Harding, Monica Lewinsky). This is probably a stretch, but there are dots! I've connected them!
