I've said some unkind things about Laurie's perspicacity in the past, but honestly given that his mother is constantly telling him that he's not feeling what he's feeling (or implying that he's only feeling it in order to hurt her feelings), it is quite an achievement that he's reached even the minimal levels of self-awareness and ability to understand others that he has.
