This was a fascinatingly melodramatic ending (told in the least melodramatic fashion possible, but still) from an author who usually goes to GREAT LENGTHS to avoid melodrama. He was one of the foremost proponents of realism in the late 19th century literary scene and one of the tenets of realism, not that there's actually a list but I'm assuming, is "You can't solve your plot problems by conveniently clobbering a character with a train." Characters can ONLY be clobbered by train if it's inconvenient!
