As far as I can tell Howells woke up in the morning and just poured forth words for the rest of the day - as well as his many novels, essays, memoirs, etc., for a while he was the editor of The Atlantic Monthly, and as well as editing, he filled in any gaps in the magazine. His output is so enormous that it's almost inevitable that it's a bit hit or miss.
