Yeah! I was thinking of the early talkies and also the way that my grandfather talked - he wasn't particularly plugged into pop culture (they had a TV, but never a computer) and so he did have this sort of fossil accent, which must have been the way everyone in southern Indiana talked in his youth.
And of course, as you say, with Russell this is going to be much more pronounced.
