Seconding [personal profile] sovay that this "we're not like THOSE queer people" thing seems to show up a lot in mid-century queer novels. Even in Brideshead Revisited, which doesn't fully commit to its queerness, has this contrast between Sebastian and Anthony Blanche, the strong sense that Sebastian may be fey but at least he's not like THAT.
