RBG

Two movies about Ruth Bader Ginsburg have come out this year: On the Basis of Sex, a biopic about Ginsburg’s groundbreaking legal work in sex discrimination, and RBG, a documentary about Ginsburg’s career as lawyer, judge, Supreme Court Justice, and icon.

I’m still waiting for On the Basis of Sex to make it to a theater near me, but I watched RBG on DVD the other day and had a good time, although as often happens with documentaries I don’t have much to say about it.

I think my favorite bit was the part where they talk about Ginsburg’s transformation into an internet meme - the Notorious RBG - because, as they note, it’s unusual for older women to be paid much attention in our society, but people will come out of the woodwork to hear Ginsburg speak, watch movies based on her life, or read about her - like this article in The Atlantic, which has some interesting discussion about the oddness of the fact that RBG - measured, moderate, focused on the law - has become a feminist hero at such an angry, radical moment.

I was retroactively grateful that she broke her ribs, given that that's how they found the lung nodules. They wouldn't have caught it so early, otherwise. Whew-asterisk.
