I feel that there's more pressure for people to leave the Midwest and/or small rural places to go to the cities, than there is for people who live in the big coastal cities to get out there and experience some cornfields. That's why they call the Midwest "flyover country."

Although you're right that in either case, many people benefit from getting out there an experiencing whatever it is they haven't experienced: the big city if they're from the middle of nowhere, the cornfields if they're from New York City. Even if all it tells them is "I like where I'm from and I want to go home."

I think you might really like this movie. There's an attention to detail (in the settings as well as the characterization) and a compassion for the characters that seems like something that would appeal to you.
