Another comment in re: the reviews: I've noticed that a lot of reviewers, particularly as you go farther back in time, seem to have trouble processing a story about a women or teenage girl that isn't about romance. There is a romance in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, but it's very secondary. The friendship powers the plot and provides all the important emotional beats, while the romance is just kind of there providing structural support. Usually in movies it's the other way round.

ETA: Usually in movies about women, I mean. There are definitely movies and TV shows about men where the important relationship is the male friendship and the girlfriend is at best a side note and at worst an impediment to the story.
