I think there's a conversation to be had about the gender politics of awful people as protagonists. Certainly there are readers who like to read about and even cheer for awful people, and even though I don't usually happen to be one of them, I can agree that those readers deserve more awful women to read about and cheer for. But the idea that simply being a woman makes an awful character not awful is... something else.
