State Fair

I went to the state fair today! ...which mostly reminded me why I haven't been to the state fair for fifteen years, although there was one glorious moment when we reached the midway and I realized it was two-dollar Tuesday which meant I could ride the swings for two dollars so of course I did it, because the swings are the best ride in the world and when my high school friends and I used to go to Indiana Beach (where the swings are built on a dock and therefore swing out over the water) I used to ditch all my friends because none of them wanted to ride the swings fifteen times in a row.

In retrospect my high school friends were really very patient and accepting people for putting up with this sort of thing.

I also got a funnel cake, but I have come to the sad realization that my days of snarfing down funnel cakes are over. I got about halfway through this one and then just didn't want to eat any more, even though it was a perfectly good funnel cake, with a crispy golden brown crust and soft melt-in-your-mouth center, all heaped up with powdered sugar. :(

I daresay the things I have grown into enjoying balance, indeed probably outweigh, the things I've grown out of: just tonight at dinner I had these wonderful meatloaf sliders that I wouldn't have touched as a kid because they had coleslaw on them, coleslaw, demon coleslaw - which actually added a delicious tang to the dish. But still it is a little sad.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Vicariously anyway--I couldn't ride on the swing ride even once, let alone 15 times. Although... do the sings also get rotated in a circle? That's what would do me in. If it was just swinging out and back like on a garden swing, I could manage that.

Yeah, it's funny how tastes keep on changing. I'm sure young-you appreciated older-you buying the funnel cake, even if you didn't finish.

Indiana Beach (where the swings are built on a dock and therefore swing out over the water)

That sounds both fun and scary.

And having just re-read a book that was the literary equivalent of a funnel cake, I can definitely recognize & be glad that the things I have grown into enjoying balance, indeed probably outweigh, the things I've grown out of.

(also now I'm craving coleslaw).
