It's super common in books, too, as is its cousin, "It's the past, but all right-thinking people believe what right-thinking people believe today." Can't have an otherwise heroic character who has sadly backward ideas about divorce laws! People might get confused and start marching across the land in favor of bringing back draconian divorce statutes.
