IMO a good mystery novelist needs to be able to characterize subtly enough that no one seems obviously too good or too bad, while still being vivid enough that the reader can tell everyone apart after a relatively short amount of set-up before the murder happens. And a mystery demands a fairly extensive cast, too: got to have plenty of suspects!

It's a pretty tall order to demand from an author, really. Writing a good mystery must be pretty hard.
