Well, Hemingway is an exception - isn't he always? He actually has interesting things to say about his love life, which many writers do not. (It helps of course that he's writing forty-odd years after the fact; gives him some distance.) Often they'll just witter on till you wish you could reach into the book, grab them by the shoulders, and shout at them, "I don't care! I'm here to learn about piranhas! But if I did care, I would tell you that the problem with your relationship is that he treats you badly, and you should dump him!"
