I'm not surprised you've heard about it; it reminded me in some faint way of Penpal, maybe just because they both have volcanoes. And girls who are friends (well, I guess Kaya is all grown up, but still), and there's some stuff about colonialism...

But it's much less well-developed in The Cartographer's Daughter than it is in Penpal.
