People's interests do wax and wane, and having kids can certainly put interests on the back burner, but ... why mention it at all? If Tolstoy is seeing it as a good thing, why on earth is that? And if he's seeing it as a sad thing, even if only a small sad thing... that seems to work against the picture of marital happiness he's painting.
