December 1: Charlie DeMarco

First day of the December meme! There are still a bunch of days left, so if you want to leave me a question - or even a second question, if you've left one already - go ahead.

This one is for [livejournal.com profile] entwashian: Charlie DeMarco.

Otherwise known as MY GIRL CHARLIE, or my favorite character in Graceland (although I liked pretty much everyone in Graceland, let’s be real), and also the character I am most worried about dying in season 2. Not that I want any of them to die (not even Briggs! but Briggs has narrative protection, in the sense that he's basically the driving engine of the narrative), but if it is Charlie then there will be tears.

I have already written a lot about my Charlie feelings here, but I think the main thing that kills me about Charlie - the thing that I didn't mention there - is that at the end of the season the thing she feels most guilty about, the thing that is tearing her up inside, is the fact that she was so suspicious of Briggs that she started working with the guy who nearly killed her and Briggs both.

Except! Except! Her suspicions of Briggs were totally justified and absolutely right, so she's beating the shit out of herself (emotionally speaking) for something that she isn't even guilty of, and Briggs is just sitting there letting her do it because he's not going to blow his own goddamn cover story, and UGH BRIGGS I HATE YOU. And sometimes I love him, but that is one of the moments where I really, deeply hate him, because Charlie may very well go into a tailspin and he could have fucking stopped it.

She's at a low point at the end of the season. She's made a string of bad decisions, starting with sending Whistler into the situation where he ended up getting killed, and all her attempts to make that death meaningful somehow have just added up to a bigger and bigger clusterfuck - and I really love the way that things in this show build off of each other, so that they're surprising when they happen but feel inevitable in hindsight. And finally it ends with her nearly getting killed by a man she trusted (and maybe had a little crush on). Of course she no longer trusts her own judgement.

Having said that, Charlie is super strong, and part of that strength is that she's willing to ask for help when she needs it (and how great is it that this is presented as part of her awesomeness? I love silent stoicism as much as anybody, but Charlie's way of dealing is really better), so maybe she'll pull through after all.

And maybe then she'll nail Briggs to the wall. I don't think anyone deserves it more than her. Although probably it will take a group effort to bring him down in the end.

I also love Charlie's story about her family recipe for spaghetti sauce, and the fact that she's managed to make Sauce Night one of Graceland's institutions (I felt so bad for Mike when he had to leave right before getting to try the sauce. RIGHT BEFORE), and the fact that in her happier moments she is basically the badass older sister of everyone in Graceland. And in her unhappy moments too, really. The scene where she slashes Johnny's bounce house? Clearly an older sister from hell moment.

Oh, man I cannot wait for you to get to Sauce Night in S2!!!!!!

It really is so frustrating to see Charlie losing confidence in herself, because as an audience member, you're, like, screaming at the TV, "GO GO GO! GET HIM!"
