it's an IMPOSSIBLE book for how much you want to just take everybody and shake them until their teeth rattle. especially arthur; but also gemma, who clearly guessed and didn't want to guess; and everybody else, too. it's such a frustrating stream of pathos, and yet i loved every. predestined. terrible. minute of it, because sometimes you just have to gorge on the tragedy.
(this said, i identify with poor martini, who's clearly from some other book, with saner people, and suffers everybody from his land of moderately good reason. i kinda ship martini/gemma/arthur, in some kinder universe).
(or rather, i did, until somebraveapollo sold me on arthur/count de monte-cristo/daddy issues).
