A bit of both. They quoted descriptions of their own characters, but also their character's thoughts about other people. So, for instance, at the beginning when the play is describing Mrs. Bennet, she quotes some of it herself, but her husband and daughters quote other parts of the description that are particularly application to their particular relationship with her.
