Window seat!!!
In a hotel this evening - it takes a long time to get to Canada - and WE HAVE A WINDOW SEAT. It overlooks a distant cornfields and a forest and a thicket of wild yellow flowers, and I have the perfect book to read while I sit there, Linnets and Valerians. I do not intend to leave until I am dragged out by wild horses and/or the promise of pie from Perkins.
We are also back in the land of Perkins! It is pretty exciting.

Linnets and Valerians was one of those books off my mother's shelf that I read and re-read when I was young and sick, or bored, or had run out of library books. It has inspired in me a lifelong urge to panel a hallway in my house in dark wood, and hide a door in it.
Based on Linnets and Valerians and The Little White Horse, I had a brief period where I tried to read more of Elizabeth Gouge's work, but her books for adults lack the everyday mysticism I found so charming in her children's literature. I still like her writing style, but I find myself wading grimly through the uplifting Christian messages, which seems rather counter to their intent.

Now, if they just have the same genderswap idea we did... But I'm excited to see Emma from these creators, even though Welcome to Sandition didn't end up interesting me.
