I wonder if part of it with Karen specifically is a sort of "Barney effect" - her books seemed babyish to readers at just the age (seven or eight) when it's VERY important not to be babyish. But still you'd think that readers could reassess this reaction as adults. (And there are a lot of characters where this isn't a factor at all!)
