State of Georgia

I've been watching State of Georgia. I think there is a lesson here, and it is this: when
entwashian recommends a TV show, I should watch it STAT.
It is awesome. The eponymous Georgia is an aspiring actress who is constantly pulling her best friend, Jo the physics grad student (PHYSICS GRAD STUDENT, people!) into adventures, which Jo accepts long-sufferingly but secretly thinks are awesome! And Georgia is fabulous and has enough self-confidence to sink a ship! And there are hijinks and hilarious banter!
This may be the only show I have ever seen which has enough female friendship.
And also two of the three series regulars are black women: Georgia and her aunt Honey, with whom she and Jo are living. And many of the recurring characters, or bit characters, are characters of color as well. (Jo's physics study group for the win!)
YAY I HAVE A NEW TV SHOW. Sadly its only 13 episodes long. Just like Wonderfalls! And Firefly! All the best TV shows get canceled early!

Date: 2011-10-17 12:20 am (UTC)I can also imagine an epic crossover of epicness with Psych, because there are interesting parallels between Shawn & Gus's relationship and Georgia & Jo's. And obviously the resolution of the mystery would involve Georgia and Shawn trying to out-diva each other.
Also, you KNOW Lassiter would get a totally inappropriate crush on Aunt Honey.

It's such a rare thing to find in North American TV, except in bits and pieces, here and there. :P
(Is sorry about Criminal Minds all over again!)

Do non-North American shows have more female friendship? I haven't noticed it so much in British TV (...of course, I haven't seen a very large cross-section of British TV), but I've heard certain types of anime have a lot of it. But I know nothing about anime so I don't know where to start.

Date: 2011-10-19 02:57 am (UTC)Honestly, I don't know that British TV (or, in fact, any other kind of TV, including anime) is much better in this regard.
To be fair, I mostly watch American TV. I see the occasional British show; I've watched a couple of terrific anime, some wonderful Kdrama, and a fantastically weird and wild Australian sci-fi show.
Canadian TV tends to be quite distinct from American TV. Like British TV vs. American TV, you wouldn't mistake one for the other. We have smaller budgets, don't necessarily hold our actors to Hollywood ideals of beauty, we tell different stories, and have a unique sense of humour!
