It all comes together for him literally in the middle of Mundt's trial when it is too late for him to do ANYTHING. And it's Liz's testimony that clues him in... she's already in the thick of it... gets shot when they're trying to get over the wall, and Leamas jumps down and gets shot beside her because fuck everyone else.
