The thing is that I feel that I HAVE perhaps read the book you're describing, with the details that don't fit Warrior Scarlet, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Maybe it wasn't a single book! Maybe we're playing Mid-Century Children's Books With Disabled Main Characters bingo.
